Cashback Apps — Why I Gave up the Swipe and Save

Cashback apps reward you for shopping at stores and online retailers. You browse the app for deals, activate them, and then earn cash back by uploading receipts or making the purchase with a linked card. They can save you money, but require some effort to compare apps, find deals, and meet redemption requirements. After using these religiously for the past few years, here’s why I finally decided not bother with them anymore.

The Allure and the Ordeal

Cashback apps can be enticing. The idea of getting a few extra % savings for just effortlessly clicking a button or two is appealing. But with all things, theres much more beneath the surface.

Jumping Through Hoops

Most of the time these offers go smoothly and as expected. But use them enough, you’re bound to run into a situation where you don’t get your expected cashback. You then make the effort of inquiring why and find out either you did something wrong and didn’t see the exclusion in the fine print or it just didn't work for no reason.

Chump Change

The truth is, unless you bought a car the cashback typically doesnt amount to much. Or at least, not enough to change your life in any meaningful way.
